Bab Al Bahrain and the Manama Municipality buildings have been included in the Register of Architectural and Urban Heritage in Arab Countries, affiliated with the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO)’s Observatory of Architectural and Urban Heritage in Arab Countries.
The announcement was made during the 11th session of the Observatory, held this month at the headquarters of the Arab League in Egypt.
The listing reflects the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to preserve the historical and cultural identity of Bahrain’s buildings and cities, as well as the instructions of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to safeguard the Kingdom’s historical and cultural heritage.
It also highlights the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities’ efforts, in coordination with relevant government entities, to promote Bahrain’s architectural heritage at regional and international forums.
The inclusion recognises the buildings’ architectural significance and their contribution to shaping Manama’s identity and urban memory. Built in 1949 on Manama’s former waterfront, Bab Al Bahrain served as a gateway to the capital and its historic souq, and remains one of the city’s prominent architectural landmarks.
The Manama Municipality building reflects Bahrain’s pioneering role in municipal administration. Established in 1919, Manama Municipality was the first municipality in the Arabian Gulf region. Following restoration, the building continues to preserve the legacy of this pioneering experience.
