The Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for West Asia, has organised the second regional workshop on advancing environmental data governance to support decision-making in West Asia.
Held in Bahrain from October 20 to 22, the workshop brings together representatives of ministries and national authorities from across the region.
Amna Hamad Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive of the SCE, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to organising specialised workshops on environmental data, highlighting their role in exchanging expertise, strengthening regional cooperation and developing practical approaches to addressing challenges in collecting, organising and analysing environmental data.
She stressed the importance of joint efforts to establish a more integrated and consistent environmental database to enable countries across the region to make effective decisions aligned with national priorities and sustainable development goals.
Al Rumaihi noted that the workshop builds on the outcomes of the first regional workshop, held in 2025, and seeks to move from introducing environmental data governance concepts to practical implementation. This includes translating the priorities identified during the first workshop into institutional and technical measures to support environmental decision-making.
Abdul Majeed Haddad, UNEP Acting Regional Director for West Asia, highlighted the importance of accurate data in developing and implementing sustainable environmental policies.
The workshop features working sessions, interactive discussions and practical group exercises, alongside the exchange of experiences and expertise among participating countries, in support of national priorities and regional cooperation.
