Wage Protection System (WPS 2.0): Advancing Fair Work and Social Justice
The Wage Protection System (WPS 2.0) is a key national initiative implemented by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) of the Kingdom of Bahrain. It represents a fundamental pillar in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
Under the Wage Protection System, employers are required to pay workers’ wages through licensed banks and financial institutions approved by the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) and registered with the LMRA, in accordance with clearly defined rules. The system has been fully developed and managed electronically by the LMRA, ensuring transparency, accountability, and the timely payment of wages.
The Wage Protection System also plays a vital role in supporting employers, particularly small and micro establishments, by fostering stable employment relationships, enhancing business reputation, and reducing wage-related disputes while expediting their resolution, thereby contributing to greater job security. The system further reflects effective public–private partnership through the constructive cooperation of banks and financial institutions, whose technical alignment and system integration have enabled a seamless digital workflow and strengthened the digital infrastructure of the labour sector.
The primary end users of the Wage Protection System include employers responsible for managing wage payments, employees who receive their salaries securely and on time, and banks that facilitate the transfer of wages. Through this ecosystem, WPS 2.0 strengthens coordination among stakeholders and supports a more structured labour market.
WPS 2.0 delivers wide-ranging benefits, including ensuring timely wage payments, preventing delays, reducing labour disputes, and safeguarding workers’ rights. It promotes trust and harmony in the workplace, contributing to higher productivity, improved employee satisfaction, and better retention rates. The system also enhances transparency by maintaining clear and auditable wage payment records, supporting compliance with labour laws and simplifying reporting and inspection processes.
Furthermore, WPS 2.0 minimizes risks associated with cash handling and promotes financial inclusion by encouraging workers to use formal banking channels. It enables government authorities to monitor wage disbursement in real time, strengthens ethical employment practices, and enhances employers’ reputations through demonstrated compliance and fairness.
Overall, the Wage Protection System (WPS 2.0) stands as a practical example of how digital transformation can reinforce labour protection, promote social justice, and support sustainable economic development. It reflects Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to building a fair, transparent, and resilient labour market aligned with national and global sustainability objectives.
