Goal 13: Climate Action

Share this page:

Take Urgent Action to Combat Climate Change and its Impacts

SDG 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by strengthening climate resilience and adaptation capacities while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Kingdom of Bahrain places climate action at the forefront of its national priorities, underpinned by its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Through an integrated national approach to climate mitigation and adaptation, the Kingdom continues to implement policies and strategies aimed at reducing emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy deployment, protecting natural ecosystems, and strengthening adaptation measures to address the impacts of climate change, thereby advancing environmental and economic sustainability.

Examples of National Initiatives Supporting the Achievement of this Goal

Bahrain’s Commitment to Carbon Neutrality by 2060 and Blueprint Bahrain

The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to advance its climate action efforts. During the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in 2023, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, unveiled Blueprint Bahrain, a national climate action plan built around three interconnected pillars: climate change mitigation, adaptation, and investment in climate solutions. The plan builds on Bahrain’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, announced by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, during COP26 in 2021. This commitment is supported by interim targets for 2035, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, increasing the share of renewable energy to 20%, quadrupling mangrove coverage, doubling tree coverage across the Kingdom, and investing in carbon capture technologies, reinforcing Bahrain’s commitment to fulfilling its international climate obligations and advancing sustainable development.

National Adaptation Investment Plan (NAIP)

The Kingdom of Bahrain places particular emphasis on strengthening its ability to adapt to climate change and addressing risks to infrastructure and urban areas. In this context, Bahrain developed the National Adaptation Investment Plan (NAIP) in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), providing a data-driven framework for assessing climate risks and integrating them into urban planning and infrastructure development. The plan focuses on protecting coastal areas and critical assets while improving their resilience to climate impacts, supporting the development of more sustainable cities and communities.

Safa Platform for Voluntary Carbon Offsetting

The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to strengthen its climate action efforts and encourage community participation in reducing carbon footprints through national initiatives supporting its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. In this context, Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company launched Safa in December 2023, a voluntary carbon offsetting platform that enables individuals and businesses to calculate, manage, and offset their carbon emissions through internationally certified carbon credits supporting environmental projects. The platform also promotes climate awareness and encourages greater participation by individuals and the private sector in adopting sustainable practices.

Green Factory Seal Initiative

As part of its efforts to advance sustainable manufacturing and strengthen environmental responsibility across the industrial sector, the Kingdom of Bahrain launched the Green Factory Seal initiative through the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in 2023 during the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28). The initiative encourages industrial facilities to adopt environmentally responsible manufacturing practices, integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, and utilize innovative technologies to reduce their carbon footprint. By promoting resource efficiency and supporting the adoption of cleaner production methods, the initiative contributes to strengthening the sustainability and competitiveness of Bahrain’s industrial sector, in line with the Kingdom’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
