Examples of National Initiatives Supporting the Achievement of this Goal
Bahrain Mangrove Initiative
The Kingdom of Bahrain places particular emphasis on expanding mangrove coverage and protecting coastal ecosystems, recognizing their vital role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. In this context, Bahrain launched the Bahrain Mangrove Initiative in December 2024, led by the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture with the support of the Supreme Council for Environment, aiming to plant 1.6 million mangrove seedlings by 2035. By May 2026, the Kingdom had exceeded this target ahead of schedule, planting 2.23 million seedlings and achieving 139% of its goal, contributing to environmental protection and Bahrain’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
Legislative Protection of Marine Biodiversity
The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to strengthen its legislative and regulatory framework to protect marine ecosystems and ensure the sustainable use of marine resources. This includes Environment Law No. (7) of 2022 and Law No. (5) of 2021 regulating international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora in accordance with CITES. These measures are complemented by the designation of six marine protected areas, collectively covering 22.3% of the Kingdom’s territorial waters, alongside seasonal fishing restrictions and measures to protect vulnerable marine species. Together, these efforts support marine biodiversity conservation, protect natural habitats, and promote the long-term sustainability of fisheries.
Artificial Reefs Project 2026–2030
The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to strengthen its efforts to protect marine ecosystems and ensure the long-term sustainability of its fisheries through the Artificial Reefs Project 2026–2030. The project aims to deploy artificial reef structures along Bahrain’s coastline to create new marine habitats, provide suitable breeding and nursery grounds for fish, and support the replenishment of fish stocks. By enhancing marine biodiversity and promoting the sustainable management of marine resources, the project contributes to safeguarding fisheries and preserving marine resources for future generations.
Pearl Oyster Beds Environmental Assessment Project
Recognizing natural pearls as a national treasure and an integral part of Bahrain’s cultural heritage, the Kingdom is undertaking a joint project between the Supreme Council for Environment and the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT) to assess the environmental conditions of pearl oyster beds and ensure their sustainability. The project involves field surveys and scientific studies to assess pearl oyster stocks and monitor the impacts of human activities on their natural habitats, alongside the development of a scientific database to support marine biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of natural pearl resources, preserving this national treasure for future generations.
