Examples of National Initiatives Supporting the Achievement of this Goal
National Water Strategy 2030
The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to strengthen water resource sustainability and ensure efficient management through the National Water Strategy 2030, which aims to provide sustainable water supplies to meet the needs of various economic sectors. The strategy is built around three key pillars: enhancing coordination among relevant stakeholders, monitoring the implementation of programmes and services, and raising awareness of the importance of water conservation.
Water Infrastructure Expansion and Strategic Distribution Stations
The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to develop its water infrastructure and strengthen its capacity to meet growing demand through the expansion of desalination projects and improvements to water transmission and distribution networks. Key projects include the Al Dur 2 Independent Water and Power Plant, developed in partnership with the private sector with a production capacity of 50 million gallons per day, alongside a water transmission network extending 622 kilometers. In 2024, the Kingdom completed several strategic water distribution stations in Hidd City, Khalifa Town, Ramli, and Salman City, enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and continuity of water supplies while supporting urban expansion and sustainable development.
Technical Innovation and Community Awareness
Bahrain has strengthened water resource management through advanced technologies and community awareness initiatives. In 2025, the Kingdom launched a satellite-based initiative to detect hidden leaks in water distribution networks, reducing water losses and improving efficiency. In 2024, the Supreme Council for Environment, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), launched the national “Sustainable Water” campaign under the slogan “Every Drop Has a Story,” promoting water conservation and sustainable consumption practices.
