Examples of National Initiatives Supporting the Achievement of this Goal
Hydroponics and Soilless Agriculture Program
The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to advance sustainable agricultural practices through the Hydroponics and Soilless Agriculture Program, which promotes innovative, resource-efficient farming methods to strengthen domestic food production while minimizing environmental impact. The program supports the adoption of modern agricultural technologies that can reduce water consumption by 70–90% compared to conventional farming methods, while improving productivity and enabling year-round cultivation. By optimizing the use of limited natural resources, the initiative contributes to enhancing food security, promoting sustainable production practices, and advancing the Kingdom’s transition towards more resilient and resource-efficient agricultural systems.
Waste Management and Circular Economy
The Kingdom of Bahrain is advancing sustainable waste management and the transition towards a circular economy through the National Waste Management Strategy, announced in 2018. The strategy establishes an integrated framework for waste collection, segregation, treatment, and recycling, with targets to reduce municipal waste generation per capita by 20% and divert up to 75% of waste from landfills. Key initiatives include the announcement of 300 community waste collection centers in 2024, alongside the development of waste sorting facilities, composting operations, and waste-to-energy solutions. These efforts are complemented by private sector partnerships for tyre recycling and the reuse of construction and demolition waste, contributing to improved resource efficiency, reduced environmental impacts, and more sustainable waste management practices.
iFactories Initiative
The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to advance its industrial sector and enhance production efficiency through the adoption of modern technologies and smart manufacturing solutions. In this context, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce launched the iFactories initiative, which aims to transform 300 existing manufacturing facilities into smart factories by 2026 by supporting manufacturers in improving productivity, reducing costs, strengthening quality control, and optimizing resource efficiency. The initiative contributes to accelerating the transition towards automated, data-driven manufacturing processes, supporting sustainable production and strengthening the competitiveness of Bahrain’s industrial sector.
